Qualified Maths Teacher with over 20 years experience providing Key Stage 3 Maths tuition.
At Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9) mathematics can move at quite a fast pace. If your child is not confident with the subject it can soon start to be a challenge to keep up. I am of the belief that, with the correct help and encouragement, everybody is able to learn this important subject.
The GCSE mathematics exams contain many questions that are problem based. This requires a deeper understanding of the concepts studied in maths, to enable them to be applied in the exam, so it is important in Key Stage 3 to ensure that your child has a good grasp of the topics studied to enable them to build on these as they progress into Key Stage 4 (GCSE).
One to one tuition can help with this, by allowing your child to study a topic at their own pace and take it further once they are ready.
I find that as confidence is improved, enjoyment and progression follow naturally.
If I feel it appropriate I will extend a topic they are studying at school in my lessons to not only provide them with a challenge, but it also gives them confidence in lessons at school.
I have had students, who would not answer a question at school as they felt the rest of the class knew more than them, coming and telling me they were the only ones in their class who had seen a new topic and managed to get on to extension work before the rest of the class and how proud they were of themselves.
I have taught many students from Year 7 through to Year 11 and enjoy seeing their confidence grow.
